To Make Your Escape Overseas—You Need the “3 Ps.”
Lately, the calls and emails sound a bit more urgent.
As part of my Global Citizen Prosperity Blueprint service, I consult with people who are interested in moving out of the United States. As election season heats up, more and more people are asking how they can do it… fast.
Sometimes that’s possible. But even the easiest routes to a life abroad take some planning. My Global Citizen consultations are a way to fast track that process. My accumulated experience and global network allow me to help people leapfrog many steps. (Find out more, here.)
One thing I found is that knowing the main pathways ahead of time can shorten the process considerably.
With that in mind, here are four ways you can start a life abroad—starting with the easiest…
- Become a digital nomad. If you can work remotely, either as an employee or freelancer, dozens of countries around the world will allow you to live there for longer periods. All it takes is proof that you earn a minimum amount of income every month, along with a clean health and legal record. You can either renew a permit in a particular country, or move from place to place, taking advantage of our connected planet.
- Get an independent means visa. Many countries allow people with guaranteed passive income (such as a pension or Social Security) to get residency for long periods. They include popular places in Europe like Portugal and Greece, Central American hot spots like Panama and Costa Rica, as well as an increasing number of places in Southeast Asia. It doesn’t have to be a pension. Any combination of dividends, interest, and other guaranteed monthly income will qualify.
- Buy yourself a Golden Visa. Plenty of folks think a Golden Visa is about buying a house and getting a residency permit. But that’s becoming less popular. In its place are other investment programs including opening a small business; government and private sector investment funds; bank deposits; and other types of commitments to a country. One advantage of Golden Visas—unlike other types of visas—is that they usually don’t require you to spend a specific amount of time in the country, so you can avoid triggering tax residency.
- Get a second citizenship. In most cases, the above three approaches allow you to accumulate time-in-country that counts toward permanent residency and eventual citizenship. But there are faster ways. If you have a foreign ancestor, you may qualify for ancestral citizenship. And if you have the resources and are inclined to do so, some countries will even allow you to buy citizenship through an investment.
Although all of these routes to life abroad require the “three Ps” — Preparation, Paperwork, and Patience — some can be achieved quickly and cheaply, while others require significant investment in time and resources.
Then, of course, there’s the question of which country is the best fit for you.
In a nutshell, this is how my Global Citizen Prosperity Blueprint helps you. It’s a three-layered blueprint to a life abroad:
